Giveaway: Max Factor Makeup!

*I'm making this post stick, so it will stay on top! Good luck, all!

This is my very first give-away on this blog, so if you've any feedback, let me know!

A while back, I signed up to be a BzzAgent. What that means is they send me cool stuff, and I test it out, and tell people about it.
BzzAgent just sent me this neat box of Max Factor makeup.

From my BzzGuide:

What do you think of when you hear the name Max Factor? For us, before this campaign, it mostly invoked images of Hollywood glitz and glamour — but, we came to find out, we only had it half right!

It's true, Max Factor first earned fame for providing movie stars with makeup essentials, but after almost a century of making women beautiful, it's also become a way to get the inside track on makeup artistry trends in the world of fashion and glamour while also helping women express their own unique and beautiful personalities (you know, what makes you you). Around the Central Hive, we like to think of Max Factor and its brilliant makeup artistry as a beauty-tipping friend who works for Vogue or on the set of Project Runway!

With an extensive line of inventive products in a full range of rich shades and colors – from hot and high-glam to beautifully blended neutrals –Max Factor helps you perfectly capture any look you're going for. Be it business meetings and casual dinners, hot dates and girls' night out or just picking up the kids from school, Max Factor has you covered, sun up to sun down (or sun up to sun up, if that's your thing).

With Lipfinity Lipcolor, you get long-wearing hot, high-glam color that stays with you all day (and into the night). Apply the long-lasting color once for up to 16 hours of color and refresh the shine with the Moisturizing Top Coat as often as you like.

Max Factor's new ColorGenius Mineral Blush contains three complimentary shades that can be beautifully blended to create a customized, healthy looking glow for your skin.

What better way to perfectly apply your ColorGenius Mineral Blush than with the Max Factor Blush Brush? This natural-hair brush gives you remarkable control to blend and apply exactly how you want.

Lash Perfection Volume Couture works with the advanced iFX brush designed to deliver superb volume and lash definition for a look that is big and bold, yet sleek and smooth. We put our old mascaras to the test and were surprised at the results. Discover the difference yourself!

Max Factor make-up is high-quality, without the high-price! You can buy it anywhere, like Wal-Mart or Target, or even their website. Or, you can win it here! I'm giving it to one lucky reader!

What you can win:

1 LipFinity Lipstick in color 016 - Glowing.

1 ColorGenius Mineral blush in color 100 - Roses.

1 Color Genius Blush Brush

1 Lash Perfection Volume Couture Mascara in 801 - Rich Black.

How to enter:

Go to Max Factor's website. Look around, and come back here with a comment, telling me something you learned there, whether it be about a product, a make-up tip, or how to get Carmen Electra's look. This nets you one entry.

For a second optional entry, Blog about this giveaway! Leave a separate comment with your blog entry link, so I can see your blog!

Make sure you leave your email address or some way of contacting you if you win. If after 3 days of my contacting you, you haven't claimed it, I'll draw a new name.

This contest runs through Midnight (okay, 11:59pm) pacific time, August 30th, 2008. No entries will be considered after that point. This giveaway is only open to residents of the United States, please.

Sometimes...

Ever have one of those moments where you feel like you don't have anything to say?

I've been posting all week, but not because of any brilliant insight on my part - I wrote all those posts last week, and had them ready to go, if I needed them. I just couldn't think of anything to say.

I still can't.

It's not like anything didn't happen to me - I went to a bachelorette party, surprise birthday party, and a wedding. I helped my sister buy a car. I had a window replaced because part of a skateboard came through it. I'm a clever person - I should be able to garner at least one post from an entire week's worth of being. But I couldn't.

Oh well. I'll write something clever next week.

Anyone else ever feel like that, sometimes?

T13: Favorite Childhood Movies

Today's Thursday Thirteen is inspired by Apooo's post last week. It got me remembering all the movies I loved as a child. So here goes!

1) Bedknobs and Broomsticks. I loved this movie. Heck, I still do. Angela Lansbury makes me smile every time I see this film.
2) Candleshoe. A lesser-known Jodie Foster film about a huckster-orphan.
3) The Thin Man. Myrna Loy and William Powell. And of course, I can't forget Asta.
4) Sabrina. Humprey Bogart is wonderful in this role.
5) His Girl Friday. Rosalind Russell and Cary Grant mesmorized me on the screen.
6) Lili. I love Leslie Caron in this role - she is at her most charming.
7) Gigi. Another Leslie Caron movie, equally charming. Of course, I don't think I got what her Grandmother was training her for until I was an adult.
8) Mary Poppins. I think I can still sing all the songs from it nearly by heart.
9) My Fair Lady. I love Audrey Hepburn in this, and Rex Harrison just makes my heart melt. Of course, as an adult, I think Julie Andrews should have been given the role, but since she won Best Actress for Mary Poppins, I guess it worked out. ;)
10) Operation Petticoat. Cary Grant and Tony Curtis in Navy Uniforms. Need I say more? It made the girl in me swoon.
11) Some Like it Hot. I love Marilyn Monroe and Tony Curtis in this movie, but really, Jack Lemon is the star of this movie, as far as I'm concerned.
12) Big. Tom Hanks playing a 12 year old who is playing a grown-up.
13) The Man with One Red Shoe. Tom Hanks again, this time as an ordinary guy who is mistaken as a spy.

Well folks, there you have it. My Thirteen Favorite Movies as a Child. Well, that I can remember.

Meme: Quirky Quirks!

Memoirs of a Chaotic Mommy has tagged me with a Quirky Quirks meme.

Here are the Rules:

1) Link to the person who tagged me.
2) Mention the rules.
3) Tell six quirky yet boring, unspectacular details about myself.
4) Tag six other blogger´s by linking to them.
5) Go to each person’s blog and leave a comment that lets them know they’ve been tagged.

6 Quirky Quirks about Me:

1) I hate sleeping near a door. I need to sleep on the side of the bed that's away from the door. I'm getting over this one, since it would mean less distance to walk for middle-of-the-night diaper changes.

2) I think raw chicken is one of the most disgusting things on the planet. Cooked chicken is fine, but raw chicken is just awful-looking and feeling.

3) I can't roll my 'R's. I used to be able to, as a child, but can't any more. High school Spanish class sucked, me going "Rrrr" while everyone else was rolling their 'R's as pretty as you please.

4) I would rather do any household chore than do laundry. I hate it. Unfortunately, there is no laundry fairy.

5) I can't remember anything I learned in college. Not even Ohm's law. How sad is that?

6) I don't understand how Hubby can generate 4 times as much laundry as I can. Does he know about my #4?

So here are the 6 people I am tagging:

Jaime @ Just Add Laughter

Stephanie @ Adventures in Babywearing

Sassy Mama Bear @ Cafe at the End of the Universe

Munchkin Mommy @ Cafe Munchkin

Doreen @ Occasional Rambling

Brittany @ Musings of a Barefoot Foodie

Thanks all, and have some fun with them!

Walt Disney World Needs You!

If you’re a Disney fan like I am, you’ll be excited to learn that on September 8, Disney will announce its search for the 2009 Walt Disney World Moms Panel!

Launched just this past year, the panel is an online forum that provides first-hand tips and insights for vacationing at the resort from a group of park-savvy parents. This year, Walt Disney World is looking for a diverse group of moms, dads and grandparents with vast knowledge of the parks and a desire to share their experience with others. And, due to the overwhelming response last year, the 2009 Moms Panel will expand from its inaugural 12 members to 16.

It’s been a great resource for families everywhere; in fact, the current panelists have fielded nearly 9,000 questions from guests who are trying to plan the perfect Walt Disney World vacation.

How to apply:

Beginning September 8 through September 19, interested applicants can visit www.disneyworldmoms.com/2009 to learn more about the Walt Disney World Moms Panel and enter. Candidates will be asked to answer a series of questions and write three brief essays; selected panelists will serve a one-year term and will each receive a 5-night, 6-day vacation to Walt Disney World for four people.

To get you even more excited, I'm going to share with you a recipe straight from Walt Disney World - their famous Tonga Toast from the Kona Cafe at the Polynesian Resort!

Meme: 6 Random Things about Myself

The Neurotic Mom just tagged me with this Meme. I am to list 6 completely random things about myself.

Now, what is a meme, you might ask? Well, according to Wikipedia, it's "any thought or behavior that can be passed from one person to another by means of imitation. Examples include thoughts, ideas, theories, gestures, practices, fashions, habits, songs and dances. Memes propagate themselves and can move through the cultural sociosphere in a manner similar to the contagious behavior of a virus."

Hmm... comparing it to a virus. Yup, that's the internet for you.

Okay, back to the subject at hand. 6 Random Things about Myself.

Rules:

1. Link to the person who tagged you.
2. Post the rules to your blog.
3. Write 6 random things about yourself.
4. Tag 6 people at the end of your post and link to them.
5. Let each person you have tagged know by leaving a comment on their blog.
6. Let the tagger know when your entry is posted.

1) I don't like plain socks. I have an entire basket full of colorful, patterned socks. I now own some plain white socks, but they're a very recent thing, and I'm not sure that trend will last. Besides, I prefer being barefoot to wearing socks and shoes.

2) My favorite color changes more often than the wind. I don't have a favorite color, but will express a slight preference for one, depending on my mood. There are too many colors in the spectrum for me to have a 'favorite.'

3) My favorite ice cream has always been mint chocolate chip. I remember as a child going to Thrifty, and paying my dime and getting a scoop of mint chocolate chip. Sometimes I'd mix it up, and get a scoop of butter pecan, but I've always come back to my true love, mint chocolate chip ice cream.

4) I haven't gotten a haircut since November 2nd, 2007. Not because I'm trying to grow my hair out, but because, by the time I was ready for a new haircut, I had a newborn baby, and now I'm just trying to find some time.

5) I love Cheetos, but hate Doritos.

6) I am intimidated / bewildered by other women sometimes. I grew up on street with all boys, have always hung around with boys, heck, and even majored in a subject where I was the only woman in most of my classes. So groups of women throw me for a loop, because I just don't feel in my element. Men are easier for me to understand, usually; they just say what they mean.

So the people I'm tagging are:

1) Veggie Mom @ Eat Your Veggies
2) Karen @ Busy Mamas
3) Miranda @ Keeper of the Cheerios
4) Mojo @ Why? What Have You Heard?
5) Mommie Mayhem @ Mommie Mayhem
6) Maternal Spark @ Maternal Spark

So much cheese.

I've been planning to take Hubby for a hike with Kicker, followed by a nice romantic picnic in the park. I'd bought wine, strawberries, grapes, tangelos, french bread, an assortment of cheeses, some mixed greens, and some crackers. I'd made lemonade, and had the picnic basket and blanket ready.

So, on Friday night, while talking with friends, no one was more surprised than I to hear me say, "We're going on a hike and picnic on Sunday - want to join us?"

But we had a blast. And while it wasn't what I planned, it may have been better.

We got to the El Dorado Nature Center around 11:30am. I got to try out my new BOB stroller! The 5 of us took a beautiful 2 mile hike, where we saw lots of turtles, butterflies, squirrels, bunnies, and bugs. It was great! We would have done another 2 mile loop, but our stomachs were growling.

We loaded back up into the car, and drove over to the picnic area. There we feasted! My friends brought strawberries, grapes, an assortment of cheeses, and water. Between the both picnic baskets, we had a Whole Foods selection of cheeses. We ate until we were stuffed! Heck, even Kicker got in on the action, gumming down a piece of french baguette!

What lazy weekend day is complete without a trip to Costco? We packed up the picnic baskets, and struggled not to go into a food coma while we rode over to Costco, where there were more goodies to be sampled. *groan*

Then we headed back to our friends' home, where we laughed and talked, and prepared moose burgers. Yep, moose. A while later, some more friends dropped by, and we fired up the grill for those burgers. We also grilled up some mooseroni - that's moose pepperoni. Burgers, mooseroni, roasted potatoes, pomegranate wine; all that adds up to one very stuffed Channah.

So, we sat around some more, chit-chatting. This was our friends' last weekend before their wedding. This Sunday, they're hitched! So we're all very glad they're choosing to spend this crazy hectic time before the wedding with us.

Someone insane, possibly me, mentions dessert. Out come strawberries, fresh whipped cream, madeline cookies, and homemade raspberry sorbet.

I'm still in a food coma from all this. And thank goodness I'm not the one who needs to fit into a wedding dress!

Survey: Land's End

Land's End and MomSelect have partnered to bring a survey to us Moms.

Lands' End is one of those companies that really value moms' opinions. Here's a way to have your voice heard and really make a difference when it comes to preparing for the upcoming winter months. And if you take their short survey (and I do mean short - it was only a few quick questions about if I'm buying a coat this winter), your name will be entered to win one of five $100 Lands' End Gift Cards. To be eligible to win, you must complete the survey by August 28th at midnight (CST).

So take the survey, and good luck winning a $100 gift card from Land's End!

T13: Reasons why I don't need NKOTB tickets

Today's Thursday Thirteen is reasons why I do not need New Kids on the Block tickets.

1) I am no longer 12 years old.
2) Hubby would never go with me.
3) Heck, even I'm embarrassed to want to go.
4) The tickets are expensive.
5) I am no longer 12 years old.
6) They go by NKOTB - c'mon, how silly is that?
7) I don't even know their songs anymore.
8) I am a happily married mother, not some fan-girl.
9) I am no longer 12 years old.
10) Jordan Knight will not see this mom with a baby in a sling and pull me on stage.
11) I don't even listen to pop music anymore.
12) I don't want to drive to the Staples Center to see them, especially midweek, at night.
13) I am no longer 12 years old.

But, c'mon, doesn't this appeal to the 12 year old girl in you, just a little bit?

WW: Finally, a photo of us!

My parents came to visit last week (Dad, my stepmother, and my stepbrother).  I'll post more photos of that another time, but for now, I have a WW post!  Finally, after 6 months of nothing but baby photos, we have a photo of my Hubby and I! Just the two of us!  Whoa.

It's not the best picture, but still, it's a picture of us!  It was taken at the aquarium.

TT: Crock Pot Brisket

Tasty Tuesday time, here!  This week, I'm breaking out the crock pot to make a sweet and sour brisket (beef roast).  It's one of the simplest recipes I've got, and it's one of my most raved about by Hubby.

  • 1 3-4 lb beef brisket
  • 1 cup catsup
  • 1/4 cup grape jelly (I usually use Knott's boysenberry preserves, though)
  • 1 envelope onion soup mix
  • Pepper, to taste

  1. Place the brisket in a slow cooker.
  2. In a bowl, combine the catsup, jelly, soup mix, and pepper.
  3. Spread sauce over meat.
  4. Cover, and cook on low for 8-10 hours, or until meat is tender.
  5. Slice brisket, and serve with cooking juices.
Voila!

T13: Things I need at the grocery store, and keep forgetting

What a glamorous life I lead! Okay, this is a boring Thursday 13, but I'm trying to write this down, since I've needed all these things from the store for at least a week, and keep forgetting.  I have Mom-itis.  I go to the store, focus so much on getting the kiddo out of there before he gets cranky (okay, okay, before *I* get cranky), and forget the majority of things for why I went to the store in the first place.

So here goes:

1) Bread.  I'm out.  My husband is out at work.  We have plenty of sandwich meat, just no bread.
2) Cheese.  I never realised how much cheese I could go through, now that I stay home.  Lunch time - cheese sandwich.  Snack?  Slice of cheese.  I like cheese.  Cheese is good.
3) Dog food.  Two big dogs = a lot of dog food purchased in this house.  We're not out yet, but I'm way below my comfort level of reserves.  Besides, this keeps them from eating the furniture.
4) Salad mix.  Always nice, and a healthier lunch idea than cheese between two tortillas (mmm... quesadillas!  Did I mention I like cheese?).
5) Strawberries.  It's summer, and I want to enjoy them while I can.
6) French bread.  Okay, I'll go ahead and admit 4-6 are because I've been planning on taking Hubby on a picnic, and those are the last ingredients I need; I even have some nice wine already picked out.
7) Diapers.  Those are permanently on the list, along with
8) Wipes.  The constant accompaniment to diapers.   Like peanut butter and jelly, only not as tasty. Not that Kicker believes me - he keeps trying to eat his clean diapers and wipes.  Not a habit I want him to get into, in case he ever gets his hands on a dirty one.  Eww.
9) Ground turkey.  I have a new recipe idea for meatloaf that I want to play with.  It involves red chile.
10) Sugar.  I have to bake for a friend's event next Friday night, and I just remembered I'm out of sugar.  I remembered at the grocery store last time to buy sugar, but for some reason I bought brown sugar, instead of regular.  Which was actually fine, since I happened to be out of brown sugar, but I didn't have it on the list, so I don't know how I knew that.
11) Powdered Sugar.  I just confirmed I'm also out of powdered sugar, too.  Do I have sugar fairies or something eating all my baking supplies?  Last grocery trip, I also had to buy flour.
12) Tahini.  I have plenty of garbanzo beans, but no tahini, and I want to make hummus.  Store-bought just isn't the same.
13) Stamps.  I've gotten so used to using online bill-pay, that I've let myself run out of forever stamps; I only have a few outdated other stamps.  Now I need to mail something, and have to buy stamps just to do so.  Stupid post office raising the rates constantly.

WW: Yearbook Yourself!

Thanks to Adventures in Babywearing, I now know what horrible yearbook photos I could have taken over the years, instead of the horrible ones I actually did take.

So, I went and yearbooked myself. I present to you the silly results:

1956 - Wow, it's scary how much I look like my mother.

1968 - Why do I feel like I should be hanging around with Frankie and Annette?

1974 - Yikes! How much product did I have to use to get my hair that straight?

1984 - Never mind, I'll take the straight hair again, please. Pretty please? Aww, c'mon.

1994 - Okay, sadly, I think I actually did have this look in one of my yearbook photos.

1996 - Ooh, I can do blonde! Hey sis, watch out, or you won't be the only blonde in the family!

Voila! For more Wordless Wednesday posts, check out 5 Minutes for Mom, or the Wordless Wednesday hub.

TT: BBQ Turkey Burgers

Time for another Tasty Tuesday!

So, last week, I shared my recipe for coleslaw. This week, I thought I'd give you Hubby's recipe for barbecue turkey burgers! He hasn't made this particular recipe for a while, but I'm hoping seeing it in print will spur him into action!

BBQ Turkey Burgers

1/2 cup barbecue sauce
1 Tbs Dijon mustard
1/4 tsp garlic powder
1/8 tsp ground black pepper
1/4 tsp salt
2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1/4 tsp hot red pepper sauce
1 lb ground turkey
1/4 cup quick oats

Combine sauce ingredients (bbq sauce, mustard, garlic, pepper, salt, worcestershire sauce, and hot sauce) in a small bowl.
In another bowl, mix the turkey and the oats together.
Add half of the sauce to the turkey mixture. Mix and form into 4 patties.
Grill over medium-flame for 5 to 7 minutes per side, or until no pink remains in center. After turning, baste burgers with remaining sauce.

Voila! BBQ Turkey Burgers!

Someecards Meme

Binary Blonde turned me onto this one.

The idea is to pick 5 cards from someecards, and have them describe you in "amazingly unflattering ways."

So here goes.

I turned 30 almost a year ago. A few months later, I became a Mom. So, instead of a young woman in her 20's, I'm now a mother in her 30's. On surveys, the dot I have to select for age range changed.

Yeah, so until recently, this was the only time I seemed to make for talking on the phone. But now that I haven't charged my bluetooth headset in a while, I'm slowly breaking this habit. Sort of - I just bought a speakerphone for my cellphone for use in the car. Stupid California safety laws interfering with how I communicate. :P

When do we all turn into our crazy relatives? Is there ever a chance where we can avoid becoming just like our relatives? No, seriously - was there ever even a slim chance I might have turned out normal? Or was I genetically doomed from the start?

What's so embarrassing about my Starbucks drink order? Let's see: I'd like a tall half-caf non-fat sugar-free vanilla latte, please. It'd be hard to fit more modifiers in there, but I'm sure, given time, I'll think of something.

Does anyone ever feel like they know what they're doing as parents? Am I forever doomed to feel like I'm treading water? As soon as I have something mastered, Kicker moves on to some other phase. It's a good thing he's cute.

Folks, I'm asking you to do the right thing, and give to charity. And by give to charity, I mean eat ice cream!!!

I just found out that, today, Dairy Queen is giving 100% of the proceeds from all blizzards sold to Children's Miracle Network. They're calling this Miracle Day.

So buy a blizzard from a participating Dairy Queen, and help the Children's Miracle Network. Please, it's for the kids, so calories don't count. ;)

I'm actually voting for Southern California, but that's because I'm selfish, and want to be able to drive there. If it's back east, there's no way I can afford to go.

WW: Take me out to the Ball Game!

These were taken at the Angels / Orioles game this past Monday night. It was Kicker's first baseball game! You can't really tell in the pictures, but he's dressed from head to toe in Angel garb!

By the way, the Angels won. Go Angels!

Tasty Tuesday: Channah's Sweet & Sour Coleslaw

Ever have one of those favorite recipes that you absolutely love, but can't find? Hubby asked me to make coleslaw this week, and this is his absolute favorite. I searched all over this afternoon, and couldn't find what I'd done with this recipe ANYWHERE. I searched through all my cookbooks - where had I stuck it? Finally, after searching through a second time, I found it. Phew!

So, to make sure I never lose it again, I'm typing it up. What's different about this recipe is that it's not made with mayo, but cider vinegar and olive oil.

Sweet & Sour Coleslaw

  • 1 head cabbage, finely shredded
  • 1/2 medium red onion, chopped fine (optional - I throw it in if I'm making the day before, otherwise I leave it out, since Hubby hates onions)
  • 1 carrot, peeled and shredded
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1/4 cup cider vinegar
  • 3 Tbs sugar (sometimes I use honey, instead)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp celery seed

  1. Combine cabbage, onion, and carrot in a big bowl.
  2. In a small bowl, combine the olive oil, vinegar, sugar, salt, and celery seed.
  3. Add the dressing to the vegetables, and toss until the vegetables are well coated.
  4. Cover and refrigerate at least 1 hour.
  5. Toss again before serving.

Enjoy!

EntreCard?

I just signed up for EntreCard. I'm not quite sure how it works, but everyone seems to be doing it. So, just like I did when I signed up for twitter, I'm signing up blindly, and hoping I'll get the hang of it.

When did I go from being cutting-edge to late-to-the-party? I used to know everything that was happening on the net or in technology. I was up on the latest and greatest. Now, I don't even know what's current on TV. Heck, the other day I was in the grocery store, and was freaked out by these cake-ster oreos - when did they mess with oreos?

Kicker isn't even a teenager yet to tell me how old and un-hip I am, and I'm already feeling it.

Anyways, drop a card off if you're part of EntreCard, and leave a comment, so I know how to find you.

Car Seat?

Leilani over at An Island Life has a feature called "Aloha Fridays." She challenges each of us to pose a question to our readers.

So, it's getting close to the point where I have to move Kicker out of his infant car seat and into a convertible car seat (one that goes rear-facing to forward). And I'm a little overwhelmed - so many choices!

So I'm going to ask everyone - what type of car seat do you use?
